Platypus Morn
Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) are remarkable Australian animals. Egg-laying mammals, an enigma to European scientists in the nineteenth century, they can be seen today in Australian waterways by patient observers. Matthew Higgins made this short video near Bega in the south-east of the country. Watch the animals as they surface to breathe, devour the invertebrates they have found on the stream bed with their incredibly sensitive bill, and sometimes just have a scratch! Some of their riverine companions are seen too. Enjoy, and reflect on the importance of protecting waterway environments, places too important to continue losing.
